Reuben Fine was the Co-winner of the 1938 AVRO tournament, which featured every candidate for the world title; he defeated Alekhine, the world champion, in their encounter. He gave up chess after the war to concentrate on a Ph.D. in psychology. This is his professional examination of the minds of chess players.
