Description
This is a facsimile reprint of the original tournament book produced in 1864. The 1862 congress was run by the British Chess Association and the first part of the book tells the history of this organization (originally founded as the Yorkshire Chess Association) before moving on to describe the congress. Amongst the vast amount of material included are the games from the Grand and Handicap tournaments as well as problems from the problem solving tournament (with solutions). The format in each tournament was a series of knockout matches and annotations to the games are provided by Lowenthal. The Grand Tournament was won by Adolf Anderssen ahead of Paulsen and Revd. Owen whilst the Handicap Tournament was won by MacKenzie. As it is a reprint this book uses old style descriptive notation throughout.
