Description
London 1851 was the first international chess tournament and saw sixteen of Europe's leading players contest a series of short knockout matches and was won by the great German Adolf Anderssen. Howard Staunton not conceived, organised and raised finance for this pioneering event, but also put together a complete and detailed record of all the games many of which are annotated in depth.
This facsimile reprint of the first 1852 edition also contains the scores of the provincial matches played after the event and a fascinating account of the organisation and finances of the tournament with supplementary documents which would make an interesting comparison with current world title regulations!
Howard Staunton is the only British player to have been recognised as the world's leading master and holds a major place in chess history both through his play and his writing. His most famous works are The Chess-Player's Handbook and The Chess-Player's Companion.
