The Monte Carlo Tournament of 1903 - 2nd hand

The 3rd international chess tournament in Monte Carlo was held from 10 February to 17 March 1903. World champion Lasker did not take part; he had just taken up residence in St. Louis, USA, as assistant professor of mathematics. Because of various disputes with the tournament management, Gunsberg, Janowski and Chigorin had been disqualified.

Playing were the Hungarian Maröczy, the winner of the 1902 Monte Carlo tournament; the American champion Marshall and Pillsbury; the Viennese Marco, Schlechter and Wolf; the Englishmen Mason and Teichmann; Albin, Moreau and Taubenhaus from Paris; Mieses and Tarrasch from Germany; and Reggio from Italy.

Tarrasch suffered 3 defeats right in the beginning, but did not lose any game thereafter and achieved the first prize with a total of 20 points; Maróczy and Pillsbury took the 2nd and 3rd places.

Das III. internationale Schachturnier in Monte Carlo wurde vom 10. Februar bis zum 17. März 1903 abgehalten. Weltmeister Lasker nahm nicht teil; er hatte sich gerade in St. Louis, USA, als Dozent der Mathematik niedergelassen. Wegen diverser Streitigkeiten mit der Turnierleitung waren Gunsberg, Janowski und Tschigorin ausgeschlossen worden.

Es spielten der Ungar Maróczy, der Sieger im Turnier Monte Carlo 1902; die amerikanischen Champions Marshall und Pillsbury; die Wiener Marco, Schlechter und Wolf; die Engländer Mason und Teichmann; Albin, Moreau und Taubenhaus aus Paris; aus Deutschland Mieses und Tarrasch; und Reggio aus Italien.

Tarrasch mußte gleich zu Beginn 3 Niederlagen einstecken, verlor danach jedoch keine Partie mehr und erreichte mit insgesamt 20 Punkten den ersten Preis; den 2. und 3. Platz belegten Maróczy und Pillsbury.
