Introduction
After White’s capture on f6 (5 ♘xf6), Black can choose between the gf Caro (5 … gxf6) and the ef Caro (5 … exf6).
The gf Caro is regarded as one of Black’s riskiest variations in the Caro-Kann. Its popularity has waned as White has found ways (especially the fianchetto of the king’s bishop) of dealing with it. At top class GM level, it is considered too risky, but at a lower level, I think it can still be of service as a surprise weapon.
The ef Caro, on the other hand, has always had a solid reputation. The theory of this line has developed slowly, as it was viewed as rather an off-beat opening. Indeed, I started to play it recently, and obtained good results, as my opponents did not seem to know much about it. Black has free and easy piece development, but with accurate play, White should keep an edge.
