Chess in Old Russia

The history of chess in Old Russia conceals many puzzles. From where did this game come to Russia, from the East or West? When did it make its first appearance among the Hystorical Sciences, I. M. Linder, answers these and many other questions. 
This second edition, appearing eleven years after the first, has been considerably revised and supplemented with material from the most recent archeological discoveries. First, a revised typology of eleventh - to seventeenth - century chess is put forth. Then the problem of the origins of chess, and questions concerning mutual ties between Old Russian chess culture and that of nighboring Slavic states are illuminated ina new manner.
