Thoughts and articles on the essence, history and psychology of chess.

Why do some religious authorities want to ban chess?
Many people in the world mistakenly think only of the bigotry of the Muslim clergy in this regard. However, as you saw earlier, also some Jewish and Christian clergy have wanted to ban chess. We find the answer to this question when we look at much earlier times. For instance, one of the ancient Chinese thinkers, Lao Tzu (604 BC-531 BC), emphasized that it was much easier to govern an ignorant society.
Although time and places change, this golden rule has been the basic practice doctrine of cruel and oppressive rulers and governments and the clergy who cooperate with them. I would like to mention an interesting incident. In 1982, after many years of lobbying, the West Germany Chess Federation was able to receive financial support from the Ministry of Finance, on the basis that chess is "a useful sport with moral importance". In the petition submitted to the Ministry, Federation officials quoted the Prussian ruler Frederick the Great (1712-1786), who holds an important place in German history; "Chess encourages people to think freely." The federation deliberately omitted the rest of what the Prussian king had to say: "This is why chess should be banned, or at least discouraged from being played."
The examples in the article are further proof that, whenever and wherever it may occur, bigotry generates oppression. Chess has been a target of bigoted clergy throughout history, precisely because it is a symbol of FREE THINKING, PERSPECTIVE, and PROFOUND INTELLIGENCE. And it will always remain so.
