The first match of the World Chess Championship, played under the auspices of the Professional Chess Association — this body was grounded in May 1993 — was organized by the famous British concern Times. On the stage of the London Savoy Theatre, the title of the strongest player on the Earth was disputed by the World Chess Champion Gary Kasparov (Russia) and the challenger — Nigel Short (England) who had beaten J.Speelman, B.Gelfand, A.Karpov, and J.Timman on his way to the contest. During six weeks, this duel was the focal point of interests of the entire chess world. Kasparov defeated his opponent with the score 12.5 against 7.5; thus the 13th World Chess Champion has become the first Champion among chess professionals!
