The most common first move for white is e2-e4. Nb8-c6 is far from being the most popular respond to it.

Student of chess openings must give top priority to preparation of their defenses to 1e4. Their winning chances will be improved if most of their opponents are relatively inexperienced with black's defense.

A couple of things should be said about this opening's name. Nimzovich was by no means its originator or inventor, as he has been called in some books. It was at least known as far back as the 16th century. In the 1800's, several players introduced it into master competition before Nimzovich was born (1886).
