Works of Simkhovich (The Revised Edition)
Harrie Grondijs
Markovic Simkhovich (1896 - 1945) composed chess problems and endgame studies. He grew upland worked in Kishinev, Moldava, until 1925 when he moved to Leningrad where he played an important innovative role in the Soviet post-revolutionary world of chess composition. He composed the arguably greatest study ever, one that had Trotsky sigh "What compositions are still worthy to be honored with a prize, after this one"
The chess career of Simkhovich spanned the years 1913 to 1941 - with two intermissions of several years of almost complete abstinence from composing. His output amounted to at least 150 problems and 45 endgame studies.
Simkhovich infused the art of study composition with a number of new concepts, including "positional draw" and the theme of "undermined squares", and introduced a number of ideas taken from the world of chess problems in a form that suited endgame composition.
